The City of Boston’s ongoing Monument Square Landmark District Study is continuing its process, with a meeting this week as part of the effort to explore creating Charlestown’s first local landmark district. The study committee, made up of residents and members of the Boston Landmarks Commission, has been meeting regularly to evaluate the area’s historic significance, potential boundaries, and what future protections could look like.
So what does this actually mean? If approved, the designation would aim to preserve the historic character of Monument Square, while also guiding future development so it fits within the neighborhood’s look and feel.
The process is still ongoing, and community input is a big part of it. A draft framework, including proposed boundaries and design guidelines, will be shared publicly this spring, with multiple opportunities for feedback before any final decision is made.
A virtual meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 25th to discuss the study. You can get all the details, including the meeting agenda, here.
