$50M Boost Moves Next Phase of Bunker Hill Public Housing Redevelopment Forward in Charlestown

Big changes continue to take shape at the Bunker Hill public housing complex, and a major funding boost is helping move things along.

According to the Boston Globe, the next phase of the long-awaited redevelopment of the Bunker Hill public housing complex is set to break ground this spring. The City of Boston is contributing $50 million through its Housing Accelerator Fund to help finance the project, marking a significant investment. The project also landed a $122 million construction loan from California private equity firm Cottonwood Group.

This next building will include 266 mixed-income units and rise about nine stories, making it one of the largest housing developments to get underway in Boston in recent years. A portion of the apartments will be set aside for residents using Section 8 vouchers, continuing the effort to create a more inclusive, mixed-income community.

The project is part of the broader $1.4 billion overhaul of the Bunker Hill housing development, a multi-phase plan that aims to transform the existing site into a modern neighborhood with thousands of new residential units, open space, and community amenities.

City officials say this latest investment is a key step in tackling Boston’s ongoing housing shortage while also reimagining one of Charlestown’s most prominent residential areas.

Construction is expected to kick off this spring, so neighbors can expect increased activity around the site in the coming months.
