Wait…wut?
In a surprising twist, Charlestown’s signature historical event—the Battle of Bunker Hill reenactment—will not take place on its home turf for its 250th anniversary. Instead, organizers have announced that the 2025 commemoration of the iconic Revolutionary War battle will be held on the Gloucester waterfront.
The decision comes largely due to logistical challenges that have long plagued Charlestown, particularly the lack of adequate parking to accommodate the crowds expected for such a milestone. While the hallowed grounds of the Bunker Hill Monument and surrounding streets have traditionally set the stage for this annual event, the anticipated influx of participants and spectators has outgrown what the neighborhood can reasonably support.
According to organizers, moving the reenactment to Gloucester opens up a world of possibilities for the event. The sprawling waterfront venue offers ample space for large-scale troop movements, spectators, and event amenities.
Still, the change has sparked mixed emotions among Charlestown residents, with many disappointed with the move. But organizers are still contemplating whether a smaller reenactment could occur in Charlestown.
