Let it grow!
Tucked away in an alley off Chelsea Street is a geo-thermally powered greenhouse. If that sounds impressive, but you’re not exactly sure what that means—same. Did some digging (pun intended) and learned that it is a greenhouse heated and cooled via energy it taps into via a geothermal well underground. Keeps cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter to provide a good climate for crops—and a good venue for fostering community.
This greenhouse is just one of the initiatives that make EastieFarm an East Boston gem.
The Food.
Food security is a main initiative within EastieFarm. They not only grow food at the gardens at their two sites but also distribute it. They provide food distribution to folks in need on Fridays and run a weekly subscription box of veggies via their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).
The Planet.
EastieFarm began by taking an abandoned lot on Sumner Street and transforming it into a garden. Then came the Greenhouse off of Chelsea Street. Community events focus on gardening, rainwater conservation, food waste management, etc.
The People.
If carbon-negative initiatives and food distribution work is your passion point, EastieFarm may be home to your community. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities and events to get involved in—whether you like to plant crops, distribute food or learn to salsa dance.
