Did you know there’s a new City of Boston landmark that’s been designated right in our backyard? As of January 2024, the Charlestown Navy Yard Ropewalk was designated as an official City of Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission. Sold in 2021 by the United States government to a private company to be converted to residential housing, the Ropewalk building has a storied history long before becoming Charlestown’s newest residential building. From 1837 to 1971, ropemakers manufactured the rope needed by the United States Navy right here at the Ropewalk until private companies took over rope production.

What was once a loud and noisy place of work is now a peaceful, sought-after residential hub for new Charlestown residents. The long granite building is located on the northerly border of the Charlestown Navy Yard with proximity to restaurants and bars like Dovetail, Pier 6, and Anchor, historical attractions like the USS Constitution and The Commandant’s House, and steps away from walking along the beautiful harbor walk.

This new landmark designation will protect the Ropewalk building indefinitely and preserve Charlestown’s historic character – especially the rich United States Navy history in the Navy Yard. On your next walk down to the Navy Yard, pop over to see this newest landmark!
