The Santarpio family continues to own and operate the restaurant, which stands as one of Boston’s first pizzerias, established to serve the Italian American community that immigrated to East Boston and its neighboring areas. Today, the iconic establishment has earned accolades from Boston Magazine, Food & Wine, and more importantly, remains a beloved fixture in the East Boston community.

Dirty Water Dough

This creative pizzeria, known for extending free pies to the renters who live above their East Boston outpost, opts for beer in their dough instead of water, resulting in a slice with a soft interior and a delightfully crispy exterior. Incorporating their home-brewed Dirty Water IPA into the pizza dough is not only a funky flavor play but a nod to the city’s past when beer was used instead of water due to the Charles River’s pollution in the 1960s. Dirty Water is also a BYOB spot!
