Councilor Coletta Zapata Calls for Hearing on Proposed Closure of Charlestown High School

Boston City Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata has filed a hearing order to examine the proposed closure of Charlestown High School and what it could mean for students, families, and the community.

Boston Public Schools has recommended closing the high school by June 30, 2028, as part of its Long-Term Facilities Plan. The Boston School Committee is expected to consider the proposal on December 2nd.

According to BPS, enrollment at Charlestown High has dropped approximately 32% over the past three years, from 820 to 559 students.

Coletta Zapata is calling for a closer look at the decision-making process, potential alternatives to closure, and the impact on students and families. The hearing would also examine the future of secondary education in Charlestown and what would happen to the existing school building.

“The news surrounding Charlestown High School is difficult for our community, especially for the students, families, and educators who call it home,” Coletta Zapata said in a statement.

She added that her priority is ensuring Charlestown has a high school that provides a world-class education and that the community has a meaningful voice in its future.

The proposed hearing would invite representatives from BPS, educators, students, families, and community members to testify.

A hearing date has not yet been announced.
