Digging Into History: Archaeologists Search for Remnants of the Battle of Bunker Hill

How cool is this!

Archaeologists are hard at work searching for remnants of the original Battle of Bunker Hill fortification as Charlestown prepares to commemorate the 251st anniversary of the historic battle. According to the Boston Globe, the team believes it may have identified the location of the long-lost earthen redoubt where Colonial forces made their stand against British troops on June 17, 1775.

The excavation has already uncovered a musket flint and musket balls dating back to the Revolutionary War era, and researchers hope to find additional artifacts—and possibly even evidence of the original fort itself. The project is taking place on the grounds of the Bunker Hill Monument and is open for the public to observe during scheduled digging hours.

For history buffs, it’s a rare opportunity to watch Charlestown’s past being uncovered in real time.
