Unauthorized Sign on Bill Russell Bridge Channels Conan O’Brien’s Not-So-Subtle Zakim Joke

The Boston Globe reports that an… ahem… eye-catching sign has popped up on the Bill Russell Bridge, and let’s just say it offers a funny take on the neighboring Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge.
“This bridge looks like a ***** that’s being held up by wire,” the sign reads — a direct quote from comedian and Brookline native Conan O’Brien, who made the joke during a 2020 episode of his talk show. The bit, filmed at home during the height of the pandemic, poked fun at the Zakim’s distinctive shape, which O’Brien called “very phallic.”
No one knows who put the sign up or when, but it was spotted on the Charlestown side of the bridge on North Washington Street. MassDOT says it definitely wasn’t authorized — though given the professional look of the sign, it’s clear someone put time (and money) into this hilarious stunt.
According to MassDOT, the sign will be removed.
