Charlestown Navy Yard to receive a federal investment of $81 million

According to Mass Live, a federal investment of $81 million will help upgrade some facilities at the Boston National Historical Park property in Charlestown, home of the USS Constitution, including a new visitor center!

The work is funded by the Great American Outdoors Act of 2020, a bipartisan law that provided nearly $3 billion for conservation projects, outdoor recreation, and maintenance of public lands.

The 43-acre National Historical Park is spread between Downtown Boston, Charlestown and South Boston and includes landmark attractions such as the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, the Old State House, the Paul Revere House, the Old North Church and the Charlestown Navy Yard.

According to the National Parks Service, the Navy Yard projects also include the planned demolition of the Hoosac Stores, a warehouse complex built on the Charlestown waterfront in the late 1800s where grain, livestock, and other products waited to be shipped around the world. Last year, the Parks Service said that it would be replaced with a new gateway center, combining the existing USS Constitution Museum and the Parks Service visitor center into a single facility.

Last week, the new projects at the Navy Yard were announced by Acting Deputy Interior Secretary Laura Daniel-Davis during a visit to Boston.
